Interested in an iMac?

Here at Duoh! it’s time to say goodbye to some old but trusty friends who served us well. So like any good parents we are looking for some folks that would take good care of our buddies and give them a pleasant home. I am talking about some original iMacs.

What’s new from Apple… The story

Great excitement this evening at 7pm for the Apple special Music Event. Rumors were flying and stock was real high again. Since Apple doesn’t give us a stream we followed everything like in the good old days on IRC ;-)

Album art on steroids

21 comments 2005 at 03.20 am posted by Veerle

My buddy Simon already posted it but since there’s bound to be people here that didn’t know about this little gem I posted it here too. Without a doubt the most freaking cool way to browse your album art on a Mac. This is the kind of eye-candy that sits proudly on my Mac screen. If you have a Mac too download the technology demo here.

Digital Asset Management II: Meet Catalog!

7 comments 2005 at 01.01 am posted by Veerle

Last year in December we talked about Digital Asset Management tools and none of all the tested apps were really perfect. The best one was Portfolio from Extensis but that tool is more suited for photographers or image file formats. It is not created to be an archive tool for DVD or CD’s that contain a wide range of different formats.

HOT NEWS: Apple powered by Intel in 2006

50 comments 2005 at 11.19 am posted by Veerle

Yes, the rumors are true. Our goal is to provide our customers with the best personal computers in the world, and looking ahead Intel has the strongest processor roadmap by far, said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. The first Intel based Mac should be in stores by June 2006 and the transition should be complete by 2007. As a just in case Mac OS X has been leading a secret double life, for the last five years every release of OS X has been compiled to run on Intel processors.

My newest toys

Since today I’m working on a brand new Apple G5. It took me a while to get things organized and ready to do the production work on it. All those apps to install! But hey, it works like a charm. My new machine is a Dual G5 2,7 GHz with 2,5 GB of RAM. My first impression: this thing flies! There is a big difference with a PowerBook G4 1,5 GHz (with 1 GB of RAM). Things I need to wait a little are now gone.

My thoughts on NetNewsWire 2.0 (review)

When a programmer put his heart and soul into a project it shows and that’s exactly what Brent Simmons has done with the recently released NetNewsWire 2.0. I’ve been using the beta’s for a very long time and never had any issues or crashes. It has become an indispensable tool in my daily life.

Real world test of H.264 vs Sorenson 3

5 comments 2005 at 06.22 am posted by Veerle

Here at Duoh! we have been using the Sorenson Video 3 Pro Codec for a long time. We had great results with it and it’s probably one of the best codecs on Mac. That was until H.264 came on to the scene. We haven’t got time to play around with it. Fortunately for us, Jeff Harrell did.

The end score is same file size but dramatically different results. If you’re into video this a good read and leaves us with a pleasant feeling that great things will be possible thanks to this new H.264 codec. Eagerly waiting for Apple to ship the new Final Cut Studio ;-)

Using Spotlight to index external volumes

18 comments 2005 at 03.51 am posted by Veerle

We at Duoh! use our Xserve to store all work and were wondering why Apple didn’t create an option in the interface to index external volumes with Spotlight. Or maybe it isn’t obvious enough to me and I didn’t find it yet? If we perform a search, 99% of the time it will be on an external mounted volume.

TIGER today at 6 PM

25 comments 2005 at 01.33 am posted by Veerle

I’ll bet it is a general feeling among fellow Mac users that it has been a long two weeks since TIGER got announced. Now it is only a matter of counting down the hours until the official launch at 6 PM this evening. I am going to collect my copy at IT Pro in Ghent, not my favourite choice but it is the closest one to home and they can’t mess up a box, however you never know :-p
