Itunes Music Store Europe in June?

2 comments 2004 at 03.11 am posted by Veerle Pieters

According to the French Macplus website our patience may be rewarded. If this report is accurate we could see the iTunes Music Store go live as soon as June. The European store is currently undergoing a live testing phase. As it looks now the store is scheduled to open in mid-June but could see delays until no later than September. A delay beyond June would somehow be attributed to the launch of 4 competitive online European music services, which are set to open in October.

PowerBook G5 still a year away so…

New toys at the office today! Not so long ago I wrote about Apple’s latest PowerBooks and that I will skip this update and hold out for a PowerBook G5. Well now I changed my mind and bought a new 17” PowerBook G4. The G5 is still probably a year away. We got a very good price from our Apple dealer and 14 days ago it was ordered.

It was a build to order machine since I requested a faster HD and an extra 512MB Ram. So to keep it short and sweet today all the toys arrived at the office. So now we’re also equipped to do some video conferencing :-)

So the only thing still not arrived is our Xserve G5. Apparently Apple has some delivery problems with the optional Xraid card. We need such a card for Raid 5. Xserve even duals are already arriving in quantities according to Macline.

It’s always a joy to unwrap and look at the attention to detail with new Apple products. Boy would I love to design the packaging for these products, not only would I know what’s coming but also make money ;-)

You can see a short unwrapping story of the 17” PowerBook here.

Thoughts on fonts for webpages

Which is your favorite font? I was wondering this this morning while I passed by Design by Fire (by Andrei Herasimchuk). Andrei wrote an article about Trebuchet and the fact that he hates it. Sure it’s all a matter of personal taste but some of them are better suited for readability. Personally I like the font, I use it a lot in Word. I find it a nicer more trendy font then Arial and Verdana. Especially Arial is so basic and lacks any personality.

Pixel patterns

Pixel patternsThe background takes an important part of the entire webpage design. Pixel patterns are a trend these days and lots of weblogs use them as a background. I like the sharpness and crispness of it. The complex patterns do fascinate me and I tend to analyze them by making a screenshot and zoom in to see how it's drawn.

Some of them look like old fashion wallpaper, I don't always like these but still, I admire the designer who made this. It's stunning and quit difficult!

Sometimes it can be hard to create an original pixel pattern. And some of you do wonder how to make these. I have found some high quality resources about this matter. There are probably much more websites on pixel patterns, but these 2 are the best ones I've found so far:

CSS Edit vs StyleMaster

6 comments 2004 at 06.18 am posted by Veerle Pieters

Some time ago I promised that I would make a post about a comparison of CSS Edit en StyleMaster. They are both great CSS tools to use to style your webpages. Now that I have used both programs for a while, I think I can give some opinion and list you my pros and cons. But bear in mind that there is a huge price difference between these 2 programs and so in my opinion we can’t make a “fair” comparison by mentioning the pros and cons. Still, I want to do it this way just to give you an overview.

CSS support in Safari

The developer connection at Apple has put a page online where you can quickly discover how far along CSS support is in Safari. All tags are linked to W3C for more explanation what they stand for. Even for Windows users this link can be handy since a good webdesigner should develop cross platform.

Icon inspiration

Some of my icon designsRo London has collected around 300 icons from 1800 websites. To be clear, the purpose of this site is not to copy the intellectual property of others but to use as a starting point for your own icon inspiration.

Sometimes making these little icons can be tricky and hard because there aren't so many ways to represent an arrow for example. Here are some icons that I made over time.

On a sidenote: Jeffrey Zeldman has a new home. I like the color scheme and prefer this one over the older version. It makes me think about ecology and nature ;-)

Is Microsoft listening?

10 comments 2004 at 04.06 am posted by Veerle Pieters

Apparently they are if we are to believe Robert Scoble. According to Andrei Herasimchuk from Design by Fire who started all this we now have the opportunity to tell Microsoft about our daily sufferings with Internet Explorer. Maybe if we all voice-in the people in Redmond will see the light and bring Internet Explorer on par with the Safari, Firefox and other standard compliant browsers that are out there.
