Veerle for Illustrator Me

2006 at 02.43 am posted by Veerle Pieters

A few weeks ago Khoi Vhin asked me to illustrate his July's archive page on Subtraction.com. My first idea was to work with a girl making this bubbles and put the blog posts in the bigger bubbles. I had it all sketched, but I wasn't really pleased with the result. It looked more like a drawing for a children's book. Also I wanted the bubbles to go "somewhere" or turn into something else.

I decided to use a more Illustrator vector style and have a girl's face in close up blowing these bubbles. I was thinking about bubbles, circles, dots... and then I thought of de Tour de France, which was this month here in Belgium and France, and a pretty big deal on TV etc. The biker adds a personal touch to the drawing. The illusion of having the bubbles transformed in the biker wearing the climber's jersey makes it more fun to look at.

Khoi, thanks for inviting me to draw this illustration for your website. It was a pleasure doing this and certainly an honor to be interviewed as well :)

You can see the initial sketch on Flickr in case you're interested.

Excellent! I saw it on Khoi Vhin’s site and just knew you had designed it in color :) I do understand that it had to be in black and white though. Being a gray/black website with just a touch of red (which I love too).
Thank you so much for showing this. You inspire me to sketch and use Illustrator.

I think the black-white version is better. There’s more depth in it. The colour version is a bit to flat, not enough contrast between the colours.

The illustration you used for your own blog is richer and more fine.
There more difference between foreground and background, more distance.

First impression…

Veerle,

I found your site while looking for illustrator tutorials. I have worked with illustrator minimally with Bezier curves. The tutorials on the beach girl, steps 1-3 amazed and inspired me. I appreciate you taking the time to share, you will probably never know how many new illustrators you have inspired. Thank you Thank you Thank you.

Nice Job. It’s nice to see how you progressed from sketch to final product. It makes me want to draw more and become more skilled with illistrator. You have a nice taste in colors too. Keep up the good work. You are my favorite blog.
PS. I am no longer a lurker.
