Geert Declercq is our first Belgian Illustrator. Geert has 20 years experience in graphic productions that combine creativity and technical accomplishment. On his client list you'll find big brands like Toyota Belgium, Mercedes Belgium, Vyncke and many others. He lives and works in Meulebeke, Belgium.

You can tell from looking at his work that Geert has a lot of experience and talent. His 3D illustrations are drawn with such a precision and attention to detail. You almost get lost when looking at them. His work looks so real and the perspective is so perfect that you would be convinced he uses a 3D application instead of Adobe Illustrator. I simply admire his work because I know what it takes to accomplish these kind of creations. I can only say 'chapeau', 'hoedje af' or 'hats off' :)

The kind of illustration work you do demands real precision and a lot of detail. Do you start from very detailed photographs?
Before getting started on a technical illustration we always hold extensive discussions with the designers of the machine or apparatus concerned. They give us the technical drawings. Sometimes photographs are taken of details or “in the case of smaller apparatuses “ they give us the product itself to work from.
Do you use Illustrator or a 3D application?
I've been using Illustrator for 17 years but I don't use a 3D application. The advantage of Illustrator is that you can add an extra creative dimension to the drawing. It's not just about providing a technically correct representation “ which is very important, of course“ but about ensuring that the final result comes over as visually attractive.

When I look at your work I would guess you are a perfectionist. I wonder whether you get it right at the first attempt.
Am I a perfectionist? It's difficult to say that about oneself, isn't it? My approach is based on a considerable amount of patience, my technical knowledge and a tremendous fascination for machines and technology. The illustrations are built up in stages, with continual feedback from the commissioning client and the drawings are modified, if necessary. The illustration is therefore executed on a step by step basis.
Any tips?
Being able to share the passion of the designer/engineer; asking the right questions before you start on a project; and putting your heart and soul into your work as an illustrator! And Veerle, I believe that you also approach your job in this way!

17 years of experience with Illustrator! That’s a fair amount.
I hope after that amount of time I’ll be able to produce something of this standard. Very impressive
